Diary, correspondence, and miscellaneous family documents. A number of letters written by Adolph are on camp stationery. All of the letters are in German, with numerous references to places and personal names in English. The diary is in English and includes a transcription.

Biography of Emma Meier Rupp and Adolph Rupp

Emma Meier, the presumed author of the diary, was a relative or employee of an unknown store owner in Brunswick, Missouri. Her allegiance is unknown, but entries in the diary suggest the proprietor had Southern sympathies. Adolph Rupp was a Union Soldier in Company H, 18th Regiment, Missouri Volunteers, Infantry. Adolph was stationed in St. Louis until June 1863. He then traveled through Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, eventually returning to St. Louis. According to research done by the book dealer, the Rupps married after the war and settled in Chariton County, Missouri.

Abstract

Civil War diary of Emma Meier, who either worked for or was a relative of an unknown store owner with Southern sympathies in Brunswick, Missouri, together with fifty-four letters, 1861-1864, written to her by Adolph Rupp, a Union soldier serving in Company H, 18th Infantry Regiment, Missouri Volunteers. Rupp wrote from St. Louis, and various locations in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. All the letters are in German, with place locations and personal names recorded in English.
