Includes correspondence, documents, reports, and notes concerning the American Red Cross in Macedonia after World War I when Oakley was commissioned as a major and served as a Deputy Commissioner from September, 1918 to March, 1919. The land was devastated and the populace, including thousands of refugees, was desolate and starving, lacking food, clothing, shelter, medical care and sanitation. American Red Cross personnel transported and distributed clothing, food, and medical supplies; set up dispensaries; initiated sanitary measures; and began the task of repatriating the displaced people. Oakley's papers give insight into the sad postwar situation in that area of the Balkans. Series also includes a log of the Atlantic crossing by the ship carrying the Macedonian Commission members from America to Europe.
