Eden, John R. to ____ [fragment], n.d.

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 18

Scope and Contents note

From the Series:

Correspondence between members of the Eden and Martin families from Sullivan, Illinois. Many of the letters are written by various friends and family members to Rose Eden Martin. A large portion of the correspondence is comprised of courtship letters between Rose Eden and Ivory J. Martin. Also included are letters written by John Eden Martin and Robert W. Martin, the sons of Rose and Ivory who served in World War I. Folder 9 contains letters written to Rose Eden by an Emile de Bow, who claimed to be a lonely French orphan studying in Knoxville, TN. However, Emile de Bow was the pseudonym for John Baxter, who had obtained Rose’s address from a mutual friend. After several exchanges, he eventually confessed his true identity. Although the letters from Rose are not included in the papers, Baxter’s letters indicate Rose was not happy when it was revealed she had been fooled.
