Series 3 S7: Stone, H. B., 1882-1890
Scope and Contents note
Henry B. Stone was a Harvard graduate who began his career at CB&Q in the mechanical department in 1880. He ascended through the ranks from general superintendent to general manager, to 2nd vice-president in 1888. His tenure as 2nd vice-president was fraught due to the contentious 1888 strike. He had assumed the position following T. J. Potter and many thought Stone’s handling of the strike ill-advised. He took a hard line against the labor unions, sometimes against the advice of C. E. Perkins. When the strike ended, Perkins sought to restructure management at CB&Q and Stone chose to resign rather than make a lateral move within the company. Nearly all correspondence encompasses the time while Stone was 2nd vice-president. Much of this series is made up of additions to the original donation.
