Biographical/Historical note
The Land Department of the H&StJ was formed to administrate land sales along the railroad and encourage immigration to the area. Series contains numerous contracts between individuals and the company detailing payment for land and cancellation of contracts. Also includes contracts for swamp lands that were part of a government land grant. The H&StJ’s government land grant and department predated those of the Burlington and Missouri River Roads in Iowa and Nebraska, and according to CB&Q historian Richard C. Overton, served as a model for the latter roads.
