Scope and Contents note

From the Series:

Primarily minutes from meetings of the Master Mechanics of the CB&Q. The minutes from 1886-1892 are copies of typescript and manuscript notes from the meetings, interspersed with correspondence, and some sketches and blueprints. Letters are addressed to W.L. Brown (1886-1888) and G.H. Ellis (1889-1892), both chemists working at Aurora. There is a printed index to these minutes, as well as a listing of all meeting dates and places from 1886-1916. Minutes from 1893 and 1895 are printed.

Topics reflected in the minutes pertain to very specific issues. For example, the minutes from Dec. 7, 1887 include payment for air brake hoses on freight cars by the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company; the need for uniform pricing of round house services for locomotives; the use of the "Christie Shoe"[a superior shoe] on #2 trucks shown on blueprint 333; and the placement of back hand rails on freight cars - whether to place them 2 ½ inches from the wall, or 3 ½ inches, which would allow for someone wearing thicker gloves to get a good grip. Topics for each meeting are assigned numbers and addressed in order number. Overall, the meetings are about recommendations to make for standardizing equipment. Of interest is a proposed list of tools to be carried on standard Road and Switch Locomotives, from the meeting of Dec. 8-9, 1886.
