 File — Box: 3, Folder: 161

Scope and Contents note

From the Series:

Miscellaneous letters, some written by Doyle family members: grandfather John Doyle, Uncle Richard (“Dickie”) Doyle, father-in-law James Leckie, daughters Mary and Jean, and wife Jean (Leckie). Other letters are associated with Doyle, such as seven letters of the Sherlock Holmes actor, William Gillette, an 1836 note from painter Horace Vernet, (claimed to be an ancestor by Sherlock Holmes), and an 1836 letter written by Eugene Vidocq, once head of the Paris Surete. Other correspondence includes: a note signed by George Bernard Shaw and a note signed by George Cruikshank, two Oscar Slater letters, and three dunning letters from Raphael Tuck & Sons, a company where Doyle was on the board of directors. The rest of the material is more recent correspondence addressed to Dr. Kittle, mostly relating to his collecting of Doyle materials.
