Scrapbook [volume 1], Nov. 23, 1912-Feb. 5, 1913
Scope and Content of the Collection
Scrapbooks containing travel ephemera and narratives compiled by Harold L. Stuart between 1912 and 1939. Each scrapbook documents a separate trip to Europe made by Stuart. His brother Charles traveled with him during 1924 and 1926, and his sister Harriet flew with him to England in 1939. The scrapbook for his 1912-1913 trip includes a handwritten index of scrapbooks volumes. Only volumes 1, 2, 6, and 8 are part of the collection, and the final 3 scrapbooks are from years after those listed in the index.
Stuart primarily documents his trips to England, Scotland, France, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Switzerland, and Belgium. He collected ephemera from many ocean liners, including the RMS Mauretania, RMS Carmania, RMS Franconia, SS St. Louis, RMS, Majestic, RMS Aquitania, RMS Olympic, and SS Bremen. He also traveled to England in 1939 on a Boeing 314, the “Yankee Clipper”, operated by Pan American Airways.
Stuart provides an almost daily narrative of his activities for each trip with descriptions of the weather, work, meals, social activities, and entertainment. The scrapbook for his 1915 trip provides some commentary on World War I. Types of materials include ship passenger lists, menus, hotel stationery, postcards, theater and concert programs, correspondence, tickets, cablegrams and telegrams, maps, photographs, ocean liner newspapers, golf ephemera, and clippings.
