 File — Box: 4, Folder: 125

Scope and Contents note

From the Series:

Clippings, correspondence, fliers, genealogy research, publications, and additional documents related to Daniel Johnson Fleming and Elizabeth Cole Fleming. The series chiefly contains correspondence sent and received by the Flemings. The bulk of their outgoing correspondence is to John A. and Julia A. Cole, Elizabeth Cole Fleming’s parents (their related documents are in the first series). Daniel Johnson Fleming also wrote to his sister, Lois Fleming.

Some correspondence relates to Daniel Johnson Fleming and Elizabeth Cole Fleming’s service as Presbyterian missionaries at Forman Christian College in Lahore, India (now Pakistan) from 1904 – 1913. The Flemings were the first missionaries sent out by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions for short-term service (eight and a half years) rather than for life, and they returned to the United States.

Additional correspondence relates to the Flemings’ return to the United States. When they returned, they did so as a family, as the Flemings had three children born aboard during their missionary service years. Upon arrival, the family first settled in Chicago where Daniel Johnson Fleming completed his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago’s Divinity School. After he finished his studies, the Flemings moved to New York City, where Elizabeth became a member of the New York Women’s Board of Foreign Missions (1915 – 1920), the United Women’s Board (1920 – 1923), and a charter member of the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions (1923 – 1944). She also was a member of the World’s Day of Prayer Committee and a trustee of Isabelle Thoburn College in Lucknow, India. During 1918 – 1919 she had a speaking career promoting missionary work. Daniel Johnson Fleming worked at the Union Theology Seminary, where he first served as the director of the newly established Department of Foreign Service and then as a professor of missions (1918 – 1944). He also published widely on Christian mission thought and practice, and some of the correspondence relates to his publications.

The genealogy research on Elizabeth Cole Fleming relates to the Alvord family genealogy research in the first series.
