Bibliographies, research notes, clippings, documents, mss., published articles, etc., pertaining to the history of the Newberry Library and its benefactor, Walter Loomis Newberry. Included are offprints and photocopies of periodical articles regarding the Library in general and its departments, collections, readers, and staff; bibliographies, mss., and research notes completed by George B. Utley and Stanley Pargellis for a biography of Walter L. Newberry and a history of the Library; notes about the Newberry family genealogy; and a photocopy of a reference to the Library in a George Horton novel.

Additional research notes on the history of Walter L. Newberry and the Newberry Library are located in the papers of George B. Utley and Stanley Pargellis (Record Groups 03/04/04 and 03/05/03).

Conditions Governing Access

The Newberry Library Archives are open for research in the Special Collections Reading Room; 1 box at a time (Priority III).

Unprocessed records are available by appointment only. Advance notice is necessary, particularly for administrative files, so that files may be screened for personnel records that are removed when records are processed.

Files containing personal or confidential information about individuals (including individual files on members of the Board of Trustees, individual donor files and records reporting the donations of an individual, personnel records, payroll records, and individual accepted fellows files) are closed for 30 years.
