Scope and Contents

From the Series:

From 1868 through the 1880s, the Walter L. Newberry estate was subject to considerable legal action in addition to routine probate filings. There was litigation by estate trustees (Skinner, Blatchford, and Bradley) and others regarding the setting off of a dower estate for Mrs. Julia Butler Newberry, the responsibility for improvement assessments on dower lands, the distribution of properties to collateral heirs, and the charitable gift provision of Julia Rosa Newberry's will.

This series contains printed legal documents and some manuscript documents regarding the administration and litigation of the Walter L. Newberry estate. The records include the will of Walter L. Newberry and other probate filings, dower estate and other litigation documents, and statements concerning the establishment of the Newberry Library.

Court records also located in the Newberry Estate Family Papers, Record Group 02/09/60.
