Scope and Contents

Estate financial records were maintained by the Trustees of the estate from Walter L. Newberry's death in 1868 until the Newberry Library was incorporated on April 25, 1892. After this date, when the Library's share of the estate was formally transferred, financial matters were handled by the Library's Business Office.

Includes financial records for the estate and for the Newberry Library, 1887 Apr. 25, 1892. After the founding of the Library, its financial records were maintained separately in the estate office. There are records for the general account (estate transactions), for the heirs account, for the Library share, and for Library operating costs.

Conditions Governing Access

The Newberry Library Archives are open for research in the Special Collections Reading Room; 1 box at a time (Priority III).

Unprocessed records are available by appointment only. Advance notice is necessary, particularly for administrative files, so that files may be screened for personnel records that are removed when records are processed.

Files containing personal or confidential information about individuals (including individual files on members of the Board of Trustees, individual donor files and records reporting the donations of an individual, personnel records, payroll records, and individual accepted fellows files) are closed for 30 years.
