Series 70: Heirs' Papers, 1861-1899
Scope and Contents
Following the death of Mrs. Walter L. Newberry on Dec. 9, 1885, the Walter L. Newberry Estate was valued at about $4,300,000. Half of the estate was divided among Walter L. Newberry's collateral descendants or heirs and the other half was designated for the creation of a "Free Public Library" in Chicago.
Heirs' papers contain general property distribution lists and financial statements, property documents, and correspondence with the estate trustees, Blatchford and Bradley, arranged by individual heir. There is also correspondence from individuals hoping to claim a share of the inheritance.

Conditions Governing Access
The Newberry Library Archives are open for research in the Special Collections Reading Room; 1 box at a time (Priority III).
Unprocessed records are available by appointment only. Advance notice is necessary, particularly for administrative files, so that files may be screened for personnel records that are removed when records are processed.
Files containing personal or confidential information about individuals (including individual files on members of the Board of Trustees, individual donor files and records reporting the donations of an individual, personnel records, payroll records, and individual accepted fellows files) are closed for 30 years.
