Subgroup 05: Stanley Pargellis papers, 1904-1968
Scope and Contents
Correspondence, reports, research notes, articles, and speeches relating to Pargellis' activities on behalf of the Newberry Library and his scholarly pursuits. Prominent correspondents (Series 01 and 02) include Ray Billington, Everett D. Graff, Adlai Stevenson, and Thomas W. Streeter. Information on day to day library administration and special projects (e.g. Floyd Dell Joseph Freeman publication, Rockefeller Foundation grants, collection prospects) is located in the Administrative subject file. Pargellis' personal file includes correspondence and research and lecture notes dating from his boyhood and early career. The Association file contains a full record of Pargellis' active participation in the American Historical Association, the American Council of Learned Societies, Chicago clubs, and many other bodies. Pargellis' writings and speeches are fully documented in Series 06, Works.

The Newberry Library Archives are open for research in the Special Collections Reading Room; 1 box at a time (Priority III).
Unprocessed records are available by appointment only. Advance notice is necessary, particularly for administrative files, so that files may be screened for personnel records that are removed when records are processed.
Files containing personal or confidential information about individuals (including individual files on members of the Board of Trustees, individual donor files and records reporting the donations of an individual, personnel records, payroll records, and individual accepted fellows files) are closed for 30 years.
Biography of Stanley Pargellis
Fifth Librarian of the Newberry Library (1942-1962), and historian. Born in 1898 in Toledo, Ohio, and educated at the University of Nevada, Oxford (Rhodes Scholar), and Yale, Pargellis taught history at Cal Tech, Yale, and Scripps before becoming Librarian of the Newberry in Chicago. Under Pargellis, the Library assumed the outlines of its modern shape. The collection grew markedly through gifts (Graff, Greenlee) and enlarged acquisitions rarities in the humanities, Midwest Manuscripts, and industrial archives. Initiating fellowship, scholarly conference, and publications programs, Pargellis laid the groundwork for the Library's Research and Education Division. Active in many scholarly organizations and clubs, Pargellis was a frequent speechmaker and a productive scholar. In 1962, Pargellis retired to Maine, where he died in 1968.
