Series organized by project, arranged alphabetically. Special library projects undertaken under the direction of the Librarian. Included are the George P. A. Healy painting collection project (bulk 1886-1915); Berthold Laufer's East Asiatic collecting project (bulk 1908-1914); Newberry Library Centre for University Extension (1892-1898); Bonaparte linguistics programs and projects bibliographies, catalogues, conferences (1928-1968); Works Progress Administration projects (1936-1951); and Newberry Library concerts (1946-1991).

Includes correspondence, reports, memoranda, minutes, inventories, indexes, newspaper clippings. Among George P. A. Healy painting records are inventories of the forty six paintings in the Library collection. The East Asiatic file includes records of Laufer's 1907-1913 buying trips to the Far East, and catalogues and correspondence between Library trustees and Laufer. Documentation of the encouragement of the study of linguistics and the use of the Bonaparte Collection, purchased in 1901, includes catalogues, correspondence, etc., regarding the expansion of the original 1926 catalogue in the late 1950's, and records of linguistics conferences held at the Library in 1966 and 1968. There are also WPA records regarding the WPA Music Library housed at the Newberry, the acquisition of symphony orchestra programs, and indexing music periodicals.

Conditions Governing Access

The Newberry Library Archives are open for research in the Special Collections Reading Room; 1 box at a time (Priority III).

Unprocessed records are available by appointment only. Advance notice is necessary, particularly for administrative files, so that files may be screened for personnel records that are removed when records are processed.

Files containing personal or confidential information about individuals (including individual files on members of the Board of Trustees, individual donor files and records reporting the donations of an individual, personnel records, payroll records, and individual accepted fellows files) are closed for 30 years.
