Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Primarily personnel cards and memoranda, but also staff directories and some correspondence, forms, and reports re retirement plans and employee accidents. Includes memoranda regarding staff hiring, discharge, salary adjustments, and leaves of absence, 1920-1940, issued primarily by George B. Utley, fourth Librarian of the Newberry Library; a card file, 1887-1963, noting names, addresses, positions, hiring and discharge or resignation dates, and salary increases of individual library employees (including watchmen for properties owned by the Newberry); and staff directories and lists, which from 1915 until 1921 recorded names, job classifications, and educational backgrounds of staff together with required reading for internal promotions.

The Newberry Library Archives are open for research in the Special Collections Reading Room; 1 box at a time (Priority III).

Unprocessed records are available by appointment only. Advance notice is necessary, particularly for administrative files, so that files may be screened for personnel records that are removed when records are processed.

Files containing personal or confidential information about individuals (including individual files on members of the Board of Trustees, individual donor files and records reporting the donations of an individual, personnel records, payroll records, and individual accepted fellows files) are closed for 30 years.
