Scope and Contents note
This series consists mainly of letters written in German to Hermann Raster by prominent Germans and German-Americans, e.g. Joseph Pulitzer, A. C. Hesing, Wilhelm Rapp, Lorenz Brentano, Udo Brachvogel, Friedrich Kapp, Karl Elze, Leopold Damrosch, and Bruno Bauer. Also included are letters in English from well-known individuals, such as Charles Dana, John A. Logan, Elihu Washburne, J.V. Farwell, Francis W. Parker, and Joseph Medill, whose topics include the fledgling Chicago Public library, immigration laws, the Chicago Board of Education, anti-temperance and the Republican Platform. Correspondence is in German unless noted as English. Correspondence is incoming unless noted as outgoing.
