Sprowl, Susan W. - A paper that rebuts Carl Sandburg's beloved, well-known poem, "Fog," by contending that his cat metaphor is inadequate to describe ocean fog, Feb. 26, 2020
Paper description
As a small boat sailor along the coast of Maine, Susan insists that ocean fog needs a comparison more muscular than a domestic cat metaphor. She writes that a stronger metaphor is necessary to depict the fearsome beauty, power, and challenge of fog at sea. After teaching herself to sail in fog by employing her own sensory sailing techniques, she shares some of her boating stories about ocean fog off the coast of Maine. She believes that Sandburg would choose a different metaphor to write about ocean fog.
