Series 1: Road maps, 1927-1996

 Series

  • Staff Only

Scope and Contents

Approximately 25,000 road maps, most folded to 23 x 11 cm. Almost all oil company road maps, but includes maps issued for dozens of firms not associated with the petroleum industry, such as banks, realtors, and state governments. Within dates of publication, some maps are filed by oil company and other corporate names and others by petroleum product names. For example, Sunray DX Oil Company and Mid-Continent Petroleum Corporation maps are filed together as the better-known name for the DX gas station chain. But other maps were inconsistently archived by the company under variant company names that changed over time. Therefore, some Hess gas station maps were filed as Amerada Hess Corporation and others as Hess Corporation. Also includes the Chek-Chart series and other road maps issued solely with Gousha’s imprint between the 1970s and 1990s.

Note that the earliest maps in this collection (1927-1949) are individually described in over 4,600 online catalog records; these are found by a call number search for “Gousha Clients.”
