Arthur, William, 1971

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 6

Scope and Contents note

From the Series:

Primarily incoming correspondence to Alfred Balk from friends and associates. As Balk maintained working relationships and friendships with many of the same people, personal and business correspondence is often intermingled. Balk divided his letters into chronological categories based on when he met people, and most correspondents date from his professional career. Earlier contacts are designated Northwestern or U.S. Army. More specific letters pertaining to articles Balk wrote, including his correspondence with Senator Paul Simon and Saturday Review editor Norman Cousins, are included with those projects in the Career series. Among Balk's significant, long-term correspondents are Isaac Asimov, Jacques Barzun, Fred Friendly, Alex Haley, and Alvin Toffler.

There is one folder of letters from Alfred Balk to his parents, written during his U.S. Army service in Japan, describing his life there and impressions of the Japanese press.
