Balk was involved administratively in a variety of journalism organizations, including the American Society of Magazine Editors, Overseas Press Club, and Society of Magazine Writers. He also participated in the formation of the National News Council, a non-profit media organization developed to handle journalistic complaints. In addition, he provided editorial assistance to Harper's during a tumultuous period, and also worked on a number of investigative projects for the Ford Foundation.
