Scope and Contents note

From the Series:

Letters, notes, cards, postcards, and telegrams of both a professional and personal nature, to and from Ann Barzel. Significant correspondence relating to dance matters come from Lincoln Kirstein, Janet Roughton (Frederic Franklin's secretary), Mary Clarke, Helen Dzhermolinska, Gerald Arpino, and Virginia Donaldson. Many correspondents sent Barzel picture postcards with dance-related themes, knowing that she collected dance images of all sorts; see the folders of Virginia Lee and Elisa Stigler for large numbers of dance-related cards, including valentines. Film-related correspondence are letters concerning the films Barzel filmed of dancers and dance companies from the 1930's-1960's; the letters include requests to borrow or copy the films, permission to use the films in various projects, etc. Thank-you letters are on various topics, and include acknowledgements for positive reviews, for monetary contributions to various scholarships and libraries, for her hospitality, for visiting, for her lectures and demonstrations, for seeing her film collection at her home, and for tours of the Dance Collection at the Newberry Library.
