Scope and Contents note
The bulk of this series contains clippings of columns from Stevens' newspaper career starting with the San Francisco Examiner in 1907 through the Chicago Herald-American in 1951. Full-page spreads from weekend editions and some Monday editions are stored in oversize boxes. Clippings are followed by typescripts of columns mainly from the latter years of Stevens' career from 1944 to 1951. Subseries 2, Interviews, contains manuscripts of feature interview pieces organized by interviewee. Subseries 3, Plays, contains several copies and drafts of Steven's play Prospect Avenue with notation, other plays, and skits written with Steven's longtime friend and colleague Gene Markey. Subseries 4, Other Works, contains a manuscript for Stevens book Actorviews, various articles, essays, and a song written by Stevens for banjo. Subseries 5, Works by Others, includes a film script for Citizen Kane, a book manuscript by Gene Fowler, playscripts by Gene Markey and others, and a partial book manuscript by Alva Johnston on the Mizner family on which Stevens had acted as advisor. Subseries 6 is a note card subject index of Steven's newspaper columns from the years 1930-1951.
