Scope and Content of the Collection

Approximately 40 letters, notes, and postcards primarily from Hayden Carruth, American poet and literary critic, to Van Allen Bradley, reporter for the Chicago Daily News and book dealer. The letters concern book reviews done by Carruth for the Chicago Daily News, but also touch on literature, events in Carruth’s life, and monetary worries. Also includes a letter to Carruth from E. E. Cummings, two letters from Carruth to Chicago journalist Herman Kogan, and one typescript copy of Carruth’s poem “Michigan Water” dated 1963. Some extra envelopes that do not correspond with the letters also included.

Biography of Hayden Carruth

American poet and literary critic.

Hayden Carruth (August 3, 1921 – September 29, 2008) was born in Waterbury, Connecticut and studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Chicago. He served as the editor of Poetry magazine from 1949-1950, as poetry editor for Harper’s, and as an editor of The Hudson Review. During his literary career, Carruth wrote more than 30 books of poetry in addition to books of literary criticism, essays, and a novel. In 1996, he won the National Book Award for his collection, "Scrambled Eggs and Whiskey." He also taught at Bucknell University and Syracuse University. Carruth lived in Johnson, Vermont for many years before living in Munnsville, New York.
