History of Encore Theatre
Old Town non-professional theater specializing in musical theater and comedic plays. Encore Theatre began as the Theatre Club of the Lawson YMCA. In 1960, the founders decided to split away and start a new theater company with a focus on training amateur theater talents and producing entertaining productions.
Their first location in River North on 641 North Clark was built out of a former strip club, with cast and crew repurposing the space as a more crowd-friendly theater. After a few years at that location, Encore’s directorial staff made the decision to move to a new location in Old Town. In 1963, the company moved to 1419 North Wells and rehabilitated the building. Company members contributed heavily with both their time and finances to ensure that Encore Theatre could continue its community work.
While the company eventually folded, Encore alumni hosted reunions for years afterward.
