Scope and Contents
Family papers including correspondence, photographs, and genealogical research materials of the Saylor and Smith families, early settlers in Oregon and Washington. Conrad George Saylor and Isaac Smith emigrated to the West in 1852 and 1853. Also includes historical records and genealogical materials related to the Butler, Heslep, and other related families, including early 1862 Civil War letters of Thomas Heslep, a Confederate soldier from Rockbridge County, Virginia in Co. F of the 27th Regiment Virginia Volunteers who died at the hospital in May of 1862. Includes the roll for Co. E of the 42nd Virginia regiment, kept by G. W. R. Heslep.
