Evangelina E. Lewis, also referred to as Evangeline, Eva, or Edie, was born April 27, 1865 in Pendleton, Indiana. She graduated from Indiana University with her A.B. in 1894, and she began teaching mathematics at Huntington High School in Huntington, Indiana in 1895. Lewis later served as the librarian of the Pendleton Library and the Fall Creek Township Public Library. Although she never married and had no children, Lewis was the aunt of Lloyd Lewis, a prominent newspaper journalist, editor, and historian; the Newberry has a collection of Lloyd Lewis’ papers (Midwest MS Lewis), as well as a collection of the Lewis Family’s papers (Midwest MS LewisF). Evangelina Lewis died December 22, 1950.

Samuel Morton Shera was born February 4, 1877 in Boone County, Indiana. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 13, 1898, and he served for approximately four years with the U.S. Infantry in the Philippines, perhaps working as a military photographer. Shera remained in the Philippines after being discharged from the Army in late 1901, working as a photographer in Manila and selling photographs of daily life in the Philippines. Shera was a family friend of Jay and Josephine Lewis, and corresponded frequently with the family during his time in the Philippines (especially 1898-1915). Shera returned to the United States around 1924, and settled in California; he died on January 6, 1950.
