Scope and Contents
Civil War letters of Z. Payson Shumway, a lawyer from Taylorville, Illinois, to his cousin Sallie Shumway and friend David Truax Moore. Shumway enlisted May 25, 1861, as a 1st Sergeant in Company H of the 14th Illinois Infantry. Promoted to 2nd and 1st Lieutenant, he served until 1864 in Missouri, Tennessee, and Mississippi, and was present at Pittsburgh Landing, Fort Donelson, and Vicksburg. He married Harriet E. Pray in 1862, and died in Taylorville in 1866.
