Biography of Diane U. Eisenberg

American educational consultant and producer.

Diane U. Eisenberg was born in 1937 in New York City. She received a B.A. in English Literature in 1958 from Hunter College, New York, and an M.A. in American Studies from the University of Maryland in 1971. A requirement in the M.A. course of study was the creation of a bibliography or checklist on the work of one's choosing from any era. She chose to work on Malcolm Cowley's oeuvre for two reasons: 1.) Cowley's "Think Back on Us" contains articles on events that were important in the lives of her family; and 2.) she was eager to work with someone who was still productive, and with whome she could interact. Initially, Cowley discouraged her, saying "it will be too much work since I've written over 1,000 pieces." But when she persevered, eh became a remarkable resource, communicating with her on a daily basis, helping to find entries often in obscure publications and in far flung libraries and collections across the country. It was a joy for her and her husband to visit him and his wife Muriel in Sherman, CT. Eisenberg was thrilled when he contributed remarks he had made at a Newberry Library function as the introduction to her checklist, "Malcolm Cowley: A Checklist of His Writings, 1916-1973." It was published by the Southern Illinois Press in 1975. Eisenberg considers the experiences garnered in preparing the Cowley checklist a highlight of her life.

From 1975 to 2020, Eisenberg, through her consulting firm, Eisenberg Associates, designed and produced numerous nationwide multi-component programs for higher education institutions, public television and the general public. Her clients included the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the National Science Foundation (NSF), Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), and the Fetzer Institute in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Eisenberg is currently retired and resides with husband Lloyd in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
