Scope and Content of the Collection

Seventeen mounted photographs of opera stars, many autographed to Setzler. The black and white promotional photographs are mounted on black paper with identification of the vocalist, vocal range, and sometimes the opera role performed. Collection also includes a Chicago City Opera Company season announcement from 1939-1940, an advertisement from the Chicago booking agent Frederick Barnes featuring names of all of the musicians represented, and a 1967 clipping remembering the soprano Mary Garden.

Biography of Frederick Edward Setzler

Frederick Edward Setzler was born in Park Ridge, IL, April 18, 1904. Although he was an accountant by trade, he volunteered and then worked at the Chicago Civic Opera Company in the 1920s and 1930s. He lived in the Chicago area until about 1958, after which he moved out West. According to his daughter, Louise Setzler Jewett, he was a “musician after 5 pm” - playing at parties and other gatherings. He passed away while visiting his daughter in Cincinnati on July 10, 1983.
