Andrew McNally album of photographs of a trip to New Mexico, Arizona, and the Grand Canyon

 Item
Identifier: VAULT-Case-F 788-M36 1897

Scope and Contents

Twenty-seven of the 53 photos appear to be stock photos of the W.H. Jackson Photo. Co., as suggested by production information printed in lower right-hand corner: "Copyright 1897. W.H. Jackson Photo. Co., Denver, Colo." Four or five are simply signed "W.H.J." Three are signed "C.A. Higgins", with the 18 remaining photos unsigned, perhaps taken by another member of the McNally party, or by McNally himself. (McNally (with fluffy white beard and bowler hat) and his grandson (boy in cap) appear in Jackson's photo of the travellers having lunch at Acoma (recto of leaf [9]), where a camera is visible lying in the foreground.).

Scope and Contents

Includes photos of one of the private Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railway cars used by the travellers, showing McNally and his grandson standing on back platform of car; the Old Palace and a street scene in Santa Fe, N.M.; Pueblo women and a Mexican "ranchita" in Laguna, N.M.; two views of Mesa Encantada (Enchanted Mesa, N.M.); five views of Acoma, N.M., including the Pueblo Acoma Mission, and the group of McNally travellers stopped for lunch; a train crossing the trestle bridge across Canon Diablo; McNally and grandson at the railroad station in Flagstaff, Ariz., and aboard a stagecoach enroute to cliff ruins from Flagstaff; cliff ruins in Walnut Canyon, Ariz.; San Francisco Peaks, Ariz.; several views of the landscape en route to the Grand Canyon; tents at Hance's camp, where visitors lodge before taking the trail down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon; guide John Hance on his burro; and nineteen photos of the Grand Canyon from various perspectives, such as Morton's Point, Ripley's Butte, and Bissell's Point. There are also photos of travellers descending the Canyon on burro, and camping at the foot of the trail; and views of the Colorado River as it cuts through the Canyon.

Abstract

Album of photographic prints, documenting a trip through New Mexico, Arizona, and the Grand Canyon, probably around 1897, by Andrew McNally, and a group which may have included his eleven year-old grandson, Andrew McNally II, and possibly photographers W.H. Jackson and C.A. Higgins, whose signed photographs of the McNallys are contained in the album.

General Note

Verso of front endpaper contains calligraphic presentation inscription to "Mr. Andrew McNally Jr. Compliments of Andrew McNally", suggesting that the album might have been a gift from grandfather to grandson, possibly commemorating the trip they took together.

Binding Information

Half-binding of contemporary stiff pebble-grained black paper over boards, with gold-ruled dark brown leather spine and corners; gold-stamped spine ornaments; glossy textured white endpapers; manufactured as "The Apex Album" by the Heinn Specialty Co. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
