Abstract

Correspondence, certificates, vouchers, orders, muster rolls, and a diary belonging to Charles Saeltzer of Mansfield, Ohio, dated between 1846 and 1865, and documenting his training and certification as a teacher, both in Germany and Ohio, and his service as a member of the 10th Ohio Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War. Most of Saeltzer's early papers are his teacher certifications from the German government, dated between 1846 and 1853; similar certifications from the state of Ohio are dated 1857-1862. His certificate of U.S. citizenship is also included, dated Feb. 26, 1862. The bulk of the collection is official appointments, regimental correspondence, general and special orders, muster rolls, and vouchers of the 10th Ohio Cavalry Regiment, in which Saeltzer served as 1st Sergeant of Company L, 2nd Lt. of Company C, and finally 1st Lt. of Company K. Saeltzer's personal diary for 1865 contains entries dated Jan. 1 to July 28, from towns such as Salem and Lexington, N.C.; and Danville, Richmond, and Ft. Monroe, Va.

Biographical / Historical

Teacher and Civil War soldier. Born in Ilbesheim, Germany on July 27, 1829, Saeltzer was trained and certified as a teacher for the Kirchheimbolanden region. He came to the United States around 1855 or 1856, and settled in Mansfield, Ohio, where he was certified to teach in that state for the years 1857-1862. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen on Feb. 26, 1862. During the Civil War, between 1862 and 1865, he served as an officer of the 10th Ohio Cavalry Regiment in Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Virginia.
