Abstract

Collection of 19 pieces of ephemera, dating from the first half of the 19th century, relating to railroads in the United States and Lower Canada, including stock and loan certificates, scrip issued by railroads, and steel engravings and a pen-and-ink drawing of rail cars. Among the stock certificates are one for four shares in the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad Co., dated 1844; one for one share in the Union Canal Company of Pennsylvania, dated 1823; and two for shares in the Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad Company. The loan certificates include one for $100 by the Mount Carbon Rail Road Company, dated 1835; two each for $400 by the Union Canal Company of Pennsylvania, dated 1825; and one for $1,000 by the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad Co., with seven warrants for $30 each, dated 1843. Also included are three used scrip notes, dated 1835-1840, issued by the River Raisin & Lake Erie Railroad Company, Bank of Monroe, and the Ohio Rail Road Company, and four sheets of unused scrip issued by the Stonington Bank, Philadephia & Reading Railroad Co., and Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad Company. The pen-and-ink drawing depicts the Boston and Worcester Railroad. The collection also includes a receipt, dated 1843, for the shipment by boat from Boston to Philadelphia of a locomotive engine.
