Scope and Content of the Collection

Records in this record group break down into four basic subject areas: Ledgers, Journals, Construction Accounts, and Miscellaneous Accounts, Cash Balances, etc. Records are very scattered and incomplete. Most of the financial information for the railroad company is summarized in annual reports: see CB&Q 32.12, Annual Reports, for these summaries.

Forms part of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company Records.

This finding aid supersedes the Guide to the Burlington Archives in the Newberry Library, 1851-1901 (Chicago: Newberry Library, 1949), and incorporates subsequent additions to the company records. Certain materials have been deaccessioned and donated to the Burlington Route Historical Society; see curator for details.

History of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company Auditor's Office

The auditor's office was responsible for maintaining the detailed financial accounts of the CB&Q, and collecting reports of expenses from the various departments and affiliated corporations. Expenses could include repairs, new building, rent, advertising, train service, station service, and fuel.
