Scope and Contents

Photographs, postcards, and other memorabilia and ephemera of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company collected by R.L. Sharick, a former CB&Q employee based in Oregon, Illinois. Included are five postcards dated 1908-1918, some of which are postmarked and bear handwritten messages, of CB&Q locomotives and stations, train bridges, and employees; ten photographs dated 1894-1961, one of which is a stereograph of the Transportation Building at the World’s Columbian Exposition and several of which are mounted, showing locomotives, passenger cars, employees, and bridges under construction; a "Zephyr" patch; a copy of no. 350 of the Union Pacific bulletin (November 1942); and a copy of the Burlington Lines code of safety rules dated July 1951. Accompanying the ephemera are photocopies of a schematic of the "Morse Telegraph Club circuit" dated 23 April 1960 and of clippings on Sharick’s retirement from CB&Q and his obituary in the Republican-reporter of Oregon, Illinois.

Abstract

Photographs, postcards, and memorabilia collected by R. L. Sharick (1892-1971), a former CB&Q employee based in Oregon, Illinois. Sharick had a 61-year career with the railroad, starting as a water boy in 1906 and culminating as a ticket agent / telegrapher in 1968.
