Biography of Ferdinand Friedrich August Pettrich

Born in Dresden in 1798, Ferdinand Pettrich was trained as a sculptor by his father, the court sculptor to the king of Saxony, and by the Danish master Bertel Thorwaldsen. In 1835, Pettrich traveled to America with his wife and three sons, settling for a time in Philadelphia and Washington D.C. While in Washington, Pettrich met numerous politicians and Native American representatives of whom he made many sketches and drawings and modeled a large number of busts, reliefs, and sculptures. Several of these sculptures are held at the Vatican Ethnological Missionary Museum.
