In 1911, Newberry Librarian W. N. C. Carlton (1909-1921) initiated the practice of storing thank you letters for publications and reference services in scrapbooks. His successor, George B. Utley (1920-1942), continued the scrapbooks for several years.
Earlier and later appreciatory correspondence is located in the papers of the Librarians, Record Groups 03/01 through 03/06.
