Charles Williamson Papers

Abstract
Extensive correspondence, documents, a journal describing an information gathering trip to Turkey of Charles Williamson, politician, British government agent, and developer of central New York State lands in the late 1700s. Williamson is suspected to have been involved in the "Burr Conspiracy," an episode in history in which Burr was accused of treason. Collection also includes research materials compiled by Isaac Joslin Cox, a scholar who wrote several articles on the Aaron Burr incident.

Announcements, flyers, artwork, buttons, newsletters, photographs, posters, t-shirts, and other materials collected by various individuals at Chicago protests, 2015-2016, responding to recurring police violence and civil rights violations against black citizens. This documentation was solicited as part of a 2016 Newberry Library exhibition, From Civil War to Civil Rights, and also includes responses to events posted by visitors to the exhibition.

Letters, receipts, contracts, 2 manuscript maps, and drawings pertaining to Brown's activities in Nicaragua around 1848-1850. Brown traveled to Central America in 1849 planning to establish a cheaper and faster commercial route west from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean across the isthmus of Nicaragua. Brown and several associates formed the Compañía de Vapores de Nicaragua and, on March 14, 1849, negotiated the first treaty with General José Trinidad Muñoz for exclusive rights to steamship...

Abstract
Papers and photographs pertaining to Chicagoan Joe Giganti, a labor defense activist who served as the Chairman of the Board of the Charles H. Kerr Publishing Company. The collection includes 1930s periodicals, documents, and ephemera of Communist and Socialist groups in Chicago, New York, Italy, and elsewhere. Also included are Giganti's University papers, a file on Giorgio del Vecchio, an audio recording of Giganti, and a photograph album, which features Joe's wife, Rose.
