Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Contains the department head's monthly and annual reports submitted to the Librarian. Reports include both narrative sections and departmental statistics. The accessions and classification reports (1895-1918), submitted by Wm. S. Merrill, also include statistics for public service activities such as the number of readers using the Library and books requested each month.

Monthly and annual technical services reports, 1918-1961, are also located in Record Group 03/20/21, where they are bound together with reports from other library departments. Departmental statistics, 1917-1942, are located in Record Group 03/20/22.

Conditions Governing Access

The Newberry Library Archives are open for research in the Special Collections Reading Room; 1 box at a time (Priority III).

Unprocessed records are available by appointment only. Advance notice is necessary, particularly for administrative files, so that files may be screened for personnel records that are removed when records are processed.

Files containing personal or confidential information about individuals (including individual files on members of the Board of Trustees, individual donor files and records reporting the donations of an individual, personnel records, payroll records, and individual accepted fellows files) are closed for 30 years.
